The Fountain of Papadiamantis

Papadiamantis Fountain (or Tsopotou)

This fountain was built with the donation of Nikolaos Tsopotou and is located behind the hotel “Despotiko”, the once home of Nikolaos Tsopotou, founder of the “Tsopotiou School”, the current primary school of Portaria. Alexandros Papadiamantis, also known as ‘Kosmokalogeros’, used to visit Portaria and enjoy moments of tranquility and inspiration at this fountain.

It is the only “covered” fountain in Portaria. The covered ones are characterized by two pegs or stone columns or wooden posts that connect the floor plan with the roof and support the latter and by a stone wall. In the center of the roof there is a ‘handful’, from which the water flows. On the floor is the ‘trough’, made of carved monolithic slabs of Pelion stone, for tasks such as watering the animals or washing clothes.

Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851 – 1911) is one of the most important Greek writers, also known as “the saint of Greek letters”.

<<Ah, every sin has its sweetness.>>
